Maths Workheets - 1 more, 1 less, 10 more, 10 less Created By - Leticha Hoopert This is a simple 7 page resource that teachers and assesses students’ knowledge of number. Knowing what number comes one more, one less, ten more and ten less is an essential skill that all students should have. Being able to automatically work out what number comes one more, one less, ten more and ten less helps students with their ability to mentally calculate problems.
This is a set of 3 worksheets, 2 blank sheets and 1 assessment sheet. The worksheets are set out in a cross shape with a number in the middle. Students are to use that centre number to work out what the number is for just one more and one less, as well as ten more and ten less and write in the missing numbers.
While teaching this strategy always remind students that when working out what number is one more and one less the number in the tens column stays the same, Eg: it will be 30, it is the number in the ones column that changes by 1, Eg: 3, 4, 5. Also remind students that when working out what number is ten more and ten less now the number in the ones column stays the same, Eg: 5, 5, 5; and the number in the tens column changes by 10, Eg: 20, 30, 40.
The blank sheets can be used for the teacher to add more numbers, the students to add more numbers or as a hands on resources. If used as a hands on resource all you need to do is to photocopy enough for each student in your class to have one cross. Cut out the centre box and laminate the crosses. The you can provide students with a hundreds board and students can place their cross straight onto the hundreds board and all that will be visible will be the number that they are working with. Students will then need to write onto their cross the numbers that come 1 more, 1 less, 10 more and 10 less with a marker. Students can then lift off their cross and check if their answers are correct. Students love being able to have a hands on activity.
The assessment sheet has been set out in a similar format to the worksheets but broken into sections. The answer for one more is to be written after the number. The answer for one less to be written before the number and answer for 10 more to be written under the number and the answer for ten less to be written on top of the number.
I found using these resources in my classroom worked perfectly and students really learnt the skill quickly. The assessment task also is very comprehensive. It shows you what students know and don’t know.
