I am passionate about education and learning. I have spent almost my entire life learning about how we learn, and am still discovering new things. I am excited about the potential of new technologies to enhance learning, and about the discoveries of neuroscience and the impact they will have upon education and learning.
After 30+ years in the classroom and many other years in education-related pursuits, I am now concentrating on writing resources to support teachers support student learning. Many of the teaching episodes are designed to stimulate discussion, and creative, critical and higher-order thinking. Others provide opportunities for the development and practice of skills in a meaningful context.
I also share my thoughts and ideas about education and learning on my blog NorahColvin.com. I’d love for you to visit me there.
Over the years I developed a core set of values which guided my teaching practice.
I value:
Individuality over group consensus
Creativity over conformity
Self-discipline over imposed order
Ingenuity over “one right way”
Choice over restriction
Questioning over silence
Independence over dependence
Self-confidence over submission
I respect children as people in and with their own rights, including the right to opportunities to develop their full potential. I believe children require an environment which is rich, stimulating, open and caring. My poem Education is, written over thirty years ago still very much represents my thoughts.
I hope you find my resources useful. I appreciate your feedback and am happy to consider requests for alterations to existing resources or suggestions for new ones. Please let me know if I can assist you in any way.
Happy teaching and learning,
Norah
