The English Skills Checklist is a developmental screening tool for classroom teachers and special education teachers to identify areas of need in English for students struggling to learn. This checklist can be complemented by a range of standardised test tools available in your school and country. The philosophy behind this Checklist is that regardless of the age of a student and demands in the classroom, there is a developmental sequence of skills. Difficulties in these early stages require direct and explicit instruction. To complete the Checklist with your students gather suitable materials for your country (letter cards, pictures, word lists, reading materials, spelling lists) and align to the checklist.
