This Indigenous Text Unit offers 8 Weeks of engaging teaching and learning experiences to introduce your Kindergarten / Foundation Level students to the Aboriginal Dreaming stories: Malu Kangaroo, How the Birds Got Their Colours, Dunbi the Owl and Warnayarra the Rainbow Snake. Ideal in the lead up to NAIDOC Week or any time of the year!
The Dreaming for Australian Indigenous people (sometimes referred to as the Dreamtime or Dreamtimes) is when the Ancestral Beings moved across the land and created life and significant geographic features.
With this unit, your students will: • Listen and respond to stories from the Dreaming • Read and view Dreaming texts, including multimodal texts • Identify and learn new vocabulary presented in the texts • Connect their own prior experiences and understandings with the text • Understand the oral tradition of the Australian Aboriginal culture and that the Dreaming stories would traditionally be told by an Elder or story custodian • Become familiar with the structure of literary recounts and literary descriptions • Discuss and describe key points from the texts and recognise narrative structure including characters, setting and a storyline consisting of a series of events • Identify, illustrate and sequence the main events of the Dreaming stories • Respond to the texts through discussion, text composition and selected response activities such as story maps, sequencing, art, craft, music and drama.
