These 40 Reading Task cards are designed for use in Reading or Literature Centers or for use in a Readers' and Writers' Workshop in the Middle School Classroom. They address areas of the curriculum that are often hard to assess in a whole class setting. Students can read the novels of their choice and still be able to demonstrate mastery of the curriculum outcomes. Students should have a notebook specifically for their responses to the task cards. In this way you can collect the notebooks at intervals, such as once a week, and go through them to record anecdotal notes about each student’s work. Through the assessment of the reading response notebooks you can assess for learning. You can determine which students need mini-lessons on various ELA topics and which ones need one-on-one instruction in completing the response activities.
