'Undercover Assistant Teachers' were developed into my classroom to encourage and reward positive behaviour. 4 students are randomly chosen each day (or lesson) to be 'undercover assistant teachers' or 'UATs', and have to spy on their classmates. I get my students to close their eyes as I hand out mini wallets to my UATs which contain a laminated ID card and notepad to record their observations. At the end of the day (or lesson), the UATs are asked to write an award for the student that they think deserves to be acknowledged for their hard work, behaviour, helping others or improvement. I printed the awards on coloured paper and gillotened them to make 4 awards each page. Once all the children are sitting on the floor, they call out the winning students. I was so surprised with how enthusiastic my students were about this - even my year 7 classes! I encourage you to give it a go.
