What if you find a word in the sky on the way to school? What if you find a nonsense word? Nonsense words are fun and useful! Nonsense word fluency measures a student’s skill to decode as well as blend individual phonemes together. By using nonsense words, it is possible to detect if a student knows the most common sounds for letters, and if a student can read words that he or she has never seen before. Nonsense words are often used in assessments. This package has two nonsense word activities that require the students to sound out the word and decide what sort of word it is – real or nonsense. In the first activity, the students are asked to divide words on card onto a sorting mat. Activity two has the students choose between two words on the card and record the real words on the recording sheet. The students can also make up their own words using letter cards - vowels are in color while the other letters are in black white. Searching for shapes and even words among the clouds is also a fascinating activity and the students can record and illustrate their words to make a small dictionary.
