Visual Perceptual Skills Addressed:
Position in Space
Position in Space perception is the ability to identify the position of any given visual stimulus in relation to oneself.
Children typically learn egocentric left-right around 5 to 7 years of age. In the “People Left-Right” Worksheets, the student must analyze the relative positions of the people in each picture, using their own body as a reference point. In so doing, they will be able to identify which person is on the left or right.
Figure Ground
Figure Ground perception is the ability to screen out any irrelevant visual material when presented with a lot of visual information at one time (to locate the important stimulus without getting confused by the background or surrounding images). This skill is key for good attention and concentration.
To complete the “People Left-Right” worksheets successfully, the student must attend to one picture (group of people) at a time within the busy field of all the other surrounding pictures.
