Visual Perceptual Skills Addressed:
Spatial Relationships
Spatial Relationships perception is the ability to identify the position of two or more visual stimuli in relation to oneself and/or in relation to each other.
In the “Copy Letter Block Positions” worksheets, the student must analyse how the letters are positioned within each block, for example, top right hand corner, or in the middle of the block, etc. The student must also identify the correct corresponding blocks in the bottom box to copy the letters to.
Figure Ground
Figure Ground perception is the ability to screen out any irrelevant visual material when presented with a lot of visual information at one time (to locate the important stimulus without getting confused by the background or surrounding images). This skill is key for good attention and concentration.
To complete the “Copy Letter Block Positions” worksheets successfully, the student must focus on one block/letter at a time within the busy field of all the other blocks/letters on the page. The student must also be able to find the place in the top box where they last left off, after copying a portion of the letters to the bottom box.
Position in Space
Position in Space perception is the ability to identify the position of any given visual stimulus in relation to oneself.
In the “Copy Letter Block Positions” worksheets, the student must analyse the orientation of each letter using their body as a reference point, in order to distinguish between letters that are commonly reversed, such as, “b/d” or “p/q”.
Visual Motor Integration
Visual Motor Integration relates to the coordination of visual perceptual skills with body movement (the use of visual information to guide a motor task). For fine motor tasks, the eyes inform the arm and hand muscles where to go like "follow the leader”, so that motor output matches visual input.
In the “Copy Letter Block Positions” worksheets, the student's eyes must guide their hand to copy the letters in a fluid and controlled manner.
