Figure Ground
Figure Ground perception is the ability to screen out any irrelevant visual material when presented with a lot of visual information at one time (to locate the important stimulus without getting confused by the background or surrounding images). This skill is key for good attention and concentration.
In order to successfully search for the word that has been specified in the instruction in the “Overlapping Words” worksheets, the student must attend to one word at a time within the busy field of the surrounding and overlapping words.
Form Constancy
Form Constancy is the ability to recognize any given visual stimulus as the same despite changes in its presentation, such as, size, color, texture, direction, orientation or context.
In the “Overlapping Words” worksheets, the student must recognize the word that has been specified in the instruction, despite the fact that the same word varies in form (change in size, change in angle/position).
Visual Closure
Visual Closure is the ability to recognize any given visual stimulus from an incomplete presentation (part of the stimulus is missing). The ability to identify what we are seeing without having to analyze every detail enables us to process information in our environment quickly.
In the “Overlapping Words” worksheets, the student must mentally fill in the parts/pieces of any words that may be concealed by the other overlapping words, in order to identify the whole word.
Visual Discrimination
Visual Discrimination is the ability to identify differences and similarities between shapes, symbols, objects or patterns, by analyzing their individual characteristics and distinctive features.
In the “Overlapping Words” worksheets, the student must compare the features of any similar looking words, in order to distinguish between them.
