Figure Ground perception is the ability to screen out any irrelevant visual material when presented with a lot of visual information at one time (to locate the important stimulus without getting confused by the background or surrounding images). This skill is key for good attention and concentration.
To complete the “Find Piece in Design” worksheets successfully, the student must find the “piece” in amongst all the design elements in one of the forms/designs.
Visual Discrimination
Visual Discrimination is the ability to identify differences and similarities between shapes, symbols, objects or patterns, by analyzing their individual characteristics and distinctive features.
In the “Find Piece in Design” worksheets, the student must compare the features of any similar looking “pieces” in order to distinguish between them, and identify the piece that matches the example at the top of each box.
Position in Space
Position in Space perception is the ability to identify the position of any given visual stimulus in relation to oneself.
In the “Find Piece in Design” worksheets, the student must analyze which “piece” is orientated/positioned the same way as the example by using their own body as a reference point.
