Visual Perceptual Skills Addressed:
Figure Ground
Figure Ground perception is the ability to screen out any irrelevant visual material when presented with a lot of visual information at one time (not confusing the background or any surrounding images with the important stimulus). This skill is key for good attention and concentration.
In order to complete the “Misty Words” worksheets successfully, the student must filter out the visual distraction of the “mist” to focus on the words. In order to search for the word in the top box, the student must attend to one word at a time within the busy field of all the other surrounding words.
Visual Closure
Visual Closure is the ability to recognize any given visual stimulus from an incomplete presentation (part of the stimulus is missing). The ability to identify what we are seeing without having to analyze every detail enables us to process information in our environment quickly.
In the “Misty Words”worksheets, the student must mentally fill in the parts/pieces of any of the words that may be concealed by the “mist”, in order to identify the whole word.
Visual Discrimination
Visual Discrimination is the ability to identify differences and similarities between two or more visual stimuli by analyzing their individual characteristics and distinctive features.
In the “Misty Words” worksheets, the student must compare the features of any similar looking words, in order to distinguish between them.
