Visual Perceptual Skills Addressed:
Spatial Relationships
Spatial Relationships perception is the ability to identify the position of two or more visual stimuli in relation to oneself and/or in relation to each other.
In the “Spacing Letters on Lines” worksheets, the student must analyze how the letters are positioned in relation to each other (the amount of space between them on each line) and in relation to the line (written on the line).
Position in Space
Position in Space perception is the ability to identify the position of any given visual stimulus in relation to oneself.
In the “Spacing Letters on Lines” worksheets, the student must distinguish between similar letters that are often reversed, such as, “b/d”, “p/q”, etc, by analyzing their orientation in relation to their own body.
Figure Ground
Figure Ground perception is the ability to screen out any irrelevant visual material when presented with a lot of visual information at one time (to locate the important stimulus without getting confused by the background or surrounding images). This skill is key for good attention and concentration.
To complete the “Spacing Letters on Lines” worksheets successfully, the student must focus on a few letters at a time within the busy field of all the other letters/lines on the page. They must also be able to find the place where they last left off after copying a portion of the letters to the lines at the bottom of the page.
Visual Motor Integration
Visual Motor Integration relates to the coordination of visual perceptual skills with body movement (the use of visual information to guide a motor task). For fine motor tasks, the eyes inform the arm and hand muscles where to go like "follow the leader”, so that motor output matches visual input.
In the “Spacing Letters on Lines” worksheets, the student's eyes must guide their hand to copy the letters in a fluid and controlled manner.
