Visual Discrimination is the ability to identify differences and similarities between two or more visual stimuli by analyzing their individual characteristics and distinctive features.
In the “Correct Word” worksheets, the student must compare the features (individual letters) of all the words to distinguish between them, and to identify the word with the correct spelling and letter orientation - compare each word to a mental picture of the correct word.
Position in Space
Position in Space perception is the ability to identify the position of any given visual stimulus in relation to oneself.
In the “Correct Word” worksheets, the student must determine whether each individual letter is orientated correctly in relation to their own body (not reversed or upside down).
Spatial Relationships
Spatial Relationships perception is the ability to identify the position of two or more visual stimuli in relation to oneself and/or in relation to each other.
In the “Correct Word” worksheets, the student must analyze the position of the letters in relation to each other (identify whether the letters are arranged in the correct sequence).
Figure Ground
Figure Ground perception is the ability to screen out any irrelevant visual material when presented with a lot of visual information at one time (to locate the important stimulus without getting confused by the background or surrounding images). This skill is key for good attention and concentration.
